Amanda Leigh and Taylor Hahn, from the House of Rolison studio, say that it is not new construction "but it could be considered a new home within an old envelope. Everything inside was renovated, respecting the structure and spirit of the 40s. La Castana is a detached house with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, with a total of 280 m² on a plot of 712 m². Built in 1948, it had a fragmented and not very fluid distribution. "The finishes were outdated and dull", the studio explains, "without responding to current needs. Some areas seemed deteriorated and the façade lacked visual appeal. It was obvious that he needed one careful reform".

The studio was inspired by the charm of old Hollywood in Nichols Canyon, providing the house with spaces full of light and wide views in a secluded environment. They incorporated contemporary European crafts throughout the interior and added spa-like bathrooms with a timeless air, underlining an idea of discreet luxury. "Instead of a complete demolition, we opted for selective and curated reform. We preserve architectural elements such as the proportions of the entrance, the fireplace wall and the rhythm of the original windows, while completely reimagining the kitchen, master suite and rear garden.

It remained and he restored the kitchen The original Cornue, "considered an authentic period piece". They looked for doors from the same period, including the entrance door, a laundry door, and one from the early 1900s for the service area. "These homes are custom built. Our mission is to create aesthetically unique environments that cannot be found anywhere else, while guaranteeing safety, solidity and durability.

In the interior furniture, they imagined a collected and curated aesthetic, with custom upholstery, carpentry with clean lines, striking metals, textured linens and hand-knotted rugs. Everything was sized to enhance the large windows and frame the views. To blend historic charm with a contemporary update, they added a larger laundry room, a main lobby with an arched antique door and they preserved the glass wall of the living room, which provides abundant natural light, controlled with new treatments and landscaping.

"The staircase had too many curves, so it was simplified to give a more direct and clean route. All bathrooms were completely updated with new layouts, finishes and contemporary level equipment. A swimming pool was added to give prominence to the rear garden. The original entrance door did not fit into the access sequence, so a period door was recovered from a local architectural antiques warehouse. A neoclassical cornice was also incorporated into the roof to provide more presence to the exterior", the study lists. For example, the main bathroom "was conceived as a sanctuary, with a sculptural arch over the bathtub. He hall was planned as an open areaand bright, connection-oriented. Outside, the garden was designed as a Lake Como-style refuge, with terraces, water and rest corners that invite leisure and escape.

They also improved the interior-exterior relationship and completely closed the estate to ensure privacy, allowing the house to go from a quiet refuge to a perfect setting for receiving guests. But at the same time, the owners give priority to outside life, with a large back garden, generous pool and terrace. "With La Castana we rely on neoclassical language, which we feel is appropriate for the proportions and environment of the house. Our love for the European soul guided every decision: timeless materials, overlapping textures and a sense of romanticism that feels rooted in history but alive in modern life. The objective was not to recreate the past, but to channel it, so that the house was soulful, lasting and fully integrated into the landscape.
